About Verified Today
Verified Today is a fictional news magazine created by students aged 12 to 15 at Collège Découverte, Geneva.
This project is not about spreading misinformation. It's about understanding how it works from the inside. Each student researched, designed, and published their own fabricated news story, built to look and feel like real journalism.
The goal is simple: to become harder to fool.
What is fake news?
Fake news is information that is clearly and demonstrably fabricated, packaged and distributed to appear as legitimate news.
Two things have to be true at the same time:
The content is invented
The form is designed to look real
Most misinformation doesn't work because it's convincing. It works because we're not looking for it.
Why make one?
Understanding a mechanism from the outside is one thing. Building it yourself is another.
By constructing a fake news story, choosing an angle, fabricating evidence, designing credibility, students develop a lasting instinct for recognizing the same techniques in the wild.
The best defense against manipulation is knowing exactly how it's done.
